Paint manufacturers design their products to perform at a specific dry film thickness, which is typically achieved through proper application methods that often include two finish coats. Applying only one coat may not provide enough material to achieve the protection and longevity the product was engineered to deliver.

A professional two-coat system helps ensure that all surfaces receive consistent coverage, especially on porous materials such as stucco, previously weathered surfaces, and areas exposed to direct sunlight. The second coat also helps eliminate thin spots, improves color depth, and creates a more durable protective barrier against rain, humidity, mold, mildew, and UV exposure.

In addition, Sherwin-Williams and many other major paint manufacturers require their products to be applied according to their published specifications in order for warranty coverage to apply. If paint is not applied properly—including situations where the recommended number of coats is not used—the manufacturer's warranty may be reduced or voided altogether.

For most exterior projects, we recommend a complete two-coat application

because it delivers the best appearance, the best protection, and the greatest long-term value for homeowners.
